Julie True Kingsley: Family Backpacking Weekend

Sometimes I like to let my travel pictures sit for a bit, then when I finally dig them out its like being there all over again.  Over Labor Day weekend we all made our way to New Hampshire for a little backpacking trip–the first one for most of the kids.

I like nothing better than seeing kids loaded up with gear heading into nature.  To get to our site we needed to hike up the mountain for almost two miles and battle the biggest, scariest hornets nest I’ve ever seen hiking.  We made it with no stings and everyone smiling.  Which is quite the accomplishment with four kids.

We built our own little tent village at a site next to a beautiful stream in the middle of the woods.  Kids spent time fishing, exploring, and planning pajama fashion shows.  We spent time eating some blue cheese and pouring some wine.

Sitting back in my old Crazy Creek chair, I watched the sun shine through the tree canopy.    Hikers occasionally walked past. Here in the woods everyone looks so healthy and vibrant.  I love that about being outdoors.

We flung our feast together and prepared to cook over the open fire.  The menu: hot dogs, grilled veggies, Pringles, and freshly harvested potatoes.  We also had this really interesting gourmet Slim Jim from The Cheese Iron that is kind of haunting me.  Must go there soon.

Simplicity at its finest!

You know, it’s funny.  There are so many things in life that cost a lot of money, but we get just as much enjoyment out of just hanging out in the woods.  I’m so glad about that…

*** Pictures seem a tad blurry today.  No more IPhone photos for me!
